Most wardrobes come with plenty of hanging rail and not much else. Adding drawers for wardrobe storage is the quickest way to fit folded clothes, socks, belts and accessories into the same footprint. At Cabinetworx you design the drawer unit online at the exact width, height and depth of your opening, then we cut it and flat pack it for delivery.
Everything is made to order in millimetre sizes, so a drawer bank can sit neatly between two existing walls, under a hanging rail, or inside a walk-in robe without filler gaps.
A low drawer bank below shirts or jackets uses dead space at the bottom of a built-in robe. Choose the height so the top of the unit clears the hems of what you hang.
A full-height tower of drawers in the middle of a built-in wardrobe splits short hanging left and right, and gives you a landing surface at waist height.
In a walk-in, deeper drawers work well along a run of shelving or as a central unit. Pair them with wardrobe shelving for a mix of folded and displayed storage.
Drawer depth is set by the carcass depth of your robe, so measure the inside of the opening before you start. As a rough guide for planning:
| Drawer type | Typically suits |
|---|---|
| Shallow drawers | Socks, underwear, ties, jewellery and accessories |
| Medium drawers | T-shirts, folded shirts, activewear |
| Deep drawers | Jumpers, denim, bedlinen and bulky folded items |
A common approach is two shallow drawers at the top and two deeper ones below. You can mix heights within a single cabinet when you configure it. Our wardrobe drawer insert page lets you set the overall size and the drawer breakdown, and there are preset options such as the 3 equal drawers cabinet if you want a straightforward layout.
Finger pull drawers use a shaped top edge on the drawer front instead of a surface handle, giving a flat, handleless look that suits minimal bedrooms and robes behind sliding doors. They also avoid handles catching on clothing in tight walk-ins. On 2PAC painted fronts this is a 45 degree bevel along the top edge; on melamine fronts it is a 90 degree gap finger pull.
If you prefer handles, plain slab fronts can be drilled on site for the hardware you choose. Fronts and panels are available in a range of board finishes through our doors, panels and fillers range, so the drawers can match or deliberately contrast with the rest of the robe.

Flat packing keeps the unit easy to carry through a hallway and into a bedroom, which matters when a drawer bank is being retrofitted into an existing built-in robe.
Measure the opening width at the top, middle and bottom and use the smallest figure. Check the internal depth from the back wall to the inside face of the doors, and allow clearance for sliding door tracks. Note the height available under any existing hanging rail or shelf. If you are unsure about a tricky opening, send the sizes through and we can talk it over.
